Water Rates and Conservation Initiatives

Water conservation has become increasingly obligatory for all of us. The New York State Department of Conservation established new consumption goals and reporting procedures for all water purveyors on Long Island in the spring of 2017. This requires a 15% reduction in peak season water consumption within the next 3-4 years.
The Roslyn Water District is working to accomplish this goal with a series of initiatives that are, at this point voluntary and/or suggestions.

They include the “Save 2 Minutes” program outlined below, the voluntary irrigation program and the new water rate schedule.

This new schedule encourages conservation through increased rates for increased usage. The overall rate increase is less than 10% over 2017. However, if we have a dry summer those who do not control their irrigation systems could see irrigation usage take them into significantly higher rates per gallon, and significantly increased water bills.
Residents with multiple irrigation zones might be wise to consider installing a WaterSense labeled irrigation controller, which acts like a thermostat for your sprinkler system telling it when to turn on and off based on local weather and landscape conditions.
